It won't happen though. If there's one thing American politicians care about, it's amassing and protecting their own personal wealth. They'll cobble something together at the last minute to avoid bankruptcy.
even without raising the debt ceiling it will never happen. the incoming revenues are more than enough to keep paying the interest on the national debt for a long, long time. only way it would happen is if the president, who becomes responsible for prioritizing payments, decides not to pay the interest. I can't imagine Obama or any other president wanting to be the first to go down in history that way, no matter how much they love pandering to their constituents and lobbyists.
