Sometimes unavoidable circumstances lead to changes in the life of both employer and employee, in which case a decent employer will recognise this and (if they've been a good worker) will try and offer at least a temporary solution.
Turns out this employer did suggest going into a less high pressure department, which he turned down, so to be honest it was his fault. Wish she'd said that in the main post, saved a lot of time.
