A little creative rewording can get around that little problem. "When asked to describe the "golden age" of marriage many people might describe the white picket fences, 2.7 children, a working husband, and a loving housewife that was such a popular image of marriage in the 1950's."

It's far from perfect, but it works to sneak in a question without really asking it. It has the same effect as asking it without violating your professor's preference of not asking a question to open an essay.
