I have heard people call liberals "anti-freedom". But, as you said: probably a different mind set. (And debating tactics).

What I'm interesting in, is where did this change?

I didn't know that about the UK. I already figured it would be more like mainland Europe. But then: I only know about liberalism in the UK from the LibDems, which seems to be like D66 in the Netherlands.
In addition, there is the whole "liberal block" in the European Parliament (of which LibDems are a part), which is definitely more right wing then leftish...
The mystery deepens... I think. *MySmiley*
