When you go to a restaurant, do typically tip?

In all but the rarest cases.

Do you tip a set amount or do you vary based on service quality?

I generally tip between 15-20%. If I"m with a group and we've had a good server, we'll tip upwards of 25-30%. But if I'm by myself and the server hasn't been particularly notable, I'll tip whatever is convenient from the total and what money I have. So I might tip as little as 10% if that's all the cash I have on me, but the other day, I didn't have any ones or change on me, so I ended up tipping the waitress about 50% of the small bill.

But I think this 20-25% default value that people will snub you for not meeting is total bollocks. If you can afford it, great, but I don't make any more than minimum wage waitresses. As a single customer, I'm incredibly low maintenance and so I don't feel inclined to tipping you 25% when all you did was glance at my table when you walked by, bring me my food, and refill my water as you walked by with the pitcher for another table.

Why do you tip or choose not to?

I tip because I know they aren't making minimum wage without my tip. The only reason I will NOT tip, is when I have a bad rude waitress. I'm also likely to get the manager and pointedly leave a penny sitting on the bill to make my point, though. But that's only happened once or twice, and my parents mostly dealt with it :P

Pizza delivery, tip the driver?

Yes

Why or why not?

Because if I'm ordering food, it's typically because I can't be assed to cook and I don't want to drive anywhere.

Other ideas in the area?

nothing I haven't said. I'd just like servers and related personnel to remember that some people are paid just as little as them. If they "snub" you by only tipping 10 or 15%, it could easily be that they simply don't feel financially comfortable tipping you more...and you didn't do a good enough job to justify straining their wallets.

I know it is a bit irritating to feel obligated to tip someone like me who has delivered your food in the rain, snow, cold, hurricane, or whatever crappy weather system is keeping you inside because you do not want to go out for supplies or food. But think about the guy who is soaked to the bone to bring you the food in the driving rain... Those tips add up, and if you dont tip and the company has to fork over more money to compensate the driver, they will raise delivery fees, food costs and everything just to get the money back from you any way.

See, I think this is just stupid. Tips should be to reward a good service...not out of guilt to keep the server from the poor bank and to keep prices low.
