When I was growing up I can't actually recall any instances of anyone being hauled into school. Everyone had heard of truant officers but I can't think of anyone who'd ever actually SEEN one.

Well, because a self-interested organization in the US wanted to generate media stir, of course!! Clever on the organization, I have to say.
