I believe in reform, but there's also a school of thought that says your reformed butt can stay in prison. The issue for me is protecting society; I'm really not interested in a true "penal" system as a means of vengeance. Mainly I'm reluctant to tell people, "you can and should reform, but it won't change anything" because it deters them from changing anything. But if I'm forced to choose between protecting one PROVEN criminals rights and the safety of entire communities, I have to side with the latter, not because it's OK to ignore peoples rights, but because it's the lesser of two necessary evils.
