I generally like reason.com, but by reason's standards that was a piss-poor article. Aside from quoting never Trumper Jonah Goldberg from the National Review, it's just more of the same rank innuendo that everyone is throwing around.
Let's remember a few points:
The firing doesn't affect the investigation. It goes on.
There was something else that happened recently other than the subpoenas. Comey testified before Congress on MAY 3. Members of Congress asked him about his actions in July 2016 and October 2016. Comey made a horrendously bad showing. He proved to Congress that he, while probably a fantastic law enforcement professional, was clearly out of his depth in the politics of it all. If Trump was considering firing him already, that testimony was the final nail in Comey's political coffin.
