However the words that are spoken have a much more lasting effect. This can be evidenced many times over by much of the population here. A parent calling their child stupid....a lover saying that you are worthless....a close friend betraying a confidence. These take years (if ever) to fully heal. Getting jumped outside a bar? Getting mugged by a stranger? You heal and move on.

It's a lot like 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' - manifestly untrue in many cases. But I think both of those are usually not intended as a factual statement, but more as a motivational one - don't let people's insults get to you, don't let them bring you down, try to get past the adversity.

Which is also how I intended it - yes, it can hurt to be mocked, humiliated, put down for just stating your opinion. But how you react to that is up to you, and in most cases it's unlikely to cause the kind of lasting trauma that you describe.
