I believe most of the popular support for the kneelers is among folks who don't really like football and won't start liking it, either. The opinions of their fans should be vastly more important to them than the opinions of the American people at large.

I think you are spot on with that point. This past weekend the NFL owners were defending The Shield more than the player's rights. Watch how quick they turn if it starts costing them at the ticket window. Or TV ratings. Or sponsors.
