Win some, lose some.
Nobody said it would disappear over-night, but that is an awful reason for not doing something about it now. There's ample evidence for what has happened in Vegas already, whether it was a legally adapted, illegally adapted or illegally smuggled weapon doesn't change the fact that the US has a culture surrounding guns that kills people. There needs to be policies implemented to change that, it may not stop the mass shooting tomorrow, but it will stop many more over the next 20 years.
So? For some people the security of reduced mass shootings isn't worth the encroachment of essential liberties, nor the costs of enforcement. Much better and more effective to just outlaw murder. If people could just be persuaded that murder is wrong, that would end any of the controversy about guns. And persuading people that the deliberate taking of human life is unacceptable is much easier than persuading them that an inert piece of metal is inherently evil. Seriously, why has NO ONE in, like decades, if not centuries, proposed or pushed any legislation to end the taking of human life?
