I'm not encouraged by this.

That would be the difference between making an adaptation that's mainly about the existing fans, or one that aims to gain a whole new audience. The latter will require some significant changes, both because a 2021 general audience has different expectations than an early 1990s fantasy reader audience, and because it's obviously a different medium.
