Well, we always have to deal with the off chance of the latter or a parallel, we can't really do much of anything in cases like that. As for the cop's sanity, I consider it ironclad, but that doesn't mean they successfully got through or truthfully reported it. Yes, maybe the cops nuts and the miller is red herring but I on general principle don't pursue skinny off chances in the face of massive evidence to the contrary, I think about them naturally, but I know they won't be acted on so why bother? Other options: The cop doesn't exist, the cop is actually a DF with investigative powers, the cop is forbidden to report their results, etc, I prefer not to muck around with such possibilities while better ones exist that actually seem plausible and fit with our info.
