The movies and books focus on isolated periods of instability, not on the general status quo. Your question is akin to watching movies on 9/11 and asking "Why are the Islamists stronger than the US?"
I don't think the question was in any way meant to bring EU stuff into discussion. Even still, from that standpoint, the dark side and sith lords do a whole lot of bad stuff.
From the standpoint of the movies, the sith lords cause a ton of damage.
As I said in my post, sith lords seem stronger because they're more powerful, not because they're stronger.
I hope that distinction makes sense. If it doesn't, check my post.
