Penny in Dr Horrible Zeeb Send a noteboard - 16/10/2009 10:12:58 PM
Seriously though, I agree with every word he says here, except about Dollhouse, of which I have only seen the first 3 episodes, & Dr. Horrible, which I only saw about 5 minutes of. Absolutely every word throughout the rest of the review, I wholeheartedly support. I have NEVER read an entertainment article I have agreed with more.

I know a lot of women who are very annoyed with Whedon's proclamations of being a feminist because he has female characters who kick ass (but only if they have magical powers, or a huge gun) and apparently that's all you need.

I also do wonder about the idea that if FIREFLY had gone on any further he'd have also ruined what was great about that show. Apparently he was already considering killing off Inara at the time the show ended, and obviously he killed Wash just for the hell of it.

Penny's death in DR HORRIBLE may work if it sets up the sequel properly, but as it stands as the ending to a one-off special it comes across as rather pointless.

I do like Whedon's shows, on the whole, but he definitely has some weird ideas at times.

Surely Penny dying is the entire point of Dr Horrible! To me it seems like Joss is playing with the typical view of villains and heroes and in the end the 'badguy' feels nothing in what should have been his greatest and most proud moment - where his goal of joining Bad Horse et al. is realised - all because the girl of his dreams is dead and it's his fault. I can't think of a better ending, although of course it sucks and not just because I have a crush on Felicia Day.

Wash dying on the other hand was just rubbish and made me whuh a great deal. But then you kinda need that to happen sometimes as otherwise the author/whatever gets accused of never killing anyone, which is clearly stupid.
