Plus Graendal would want to eliminate someone who might tell Rand where her main headquarters were, so I could see her looking around the Palace, seeing Asmodean and balefiring him as a precaution which plays into the roadkill idea.

I think Moghedien could have tried to escape be entering Tel'Aran'Rhiod in the flesh, gone to the Caemlyn, ran into Asmodean, panicked and balefired him just in time to retreat. We see her do the same with Nynaeve - she fires a stream of balefire and then goes running off.
