I stand corrected. Though I will say that the uses in the books don't match the definition.

Skimming
The ability to open a gateway to a dark dimension (not well defined or understood), move through that dimension, and open another gateway back into the real world in a different location. First mention is TFoH,Ch6. Anyone of sufficient strength and knowledge can Skim. Skimming requires detailed knowledge of the place one is Skimming to. Skimming was not even known as a lost Talent. (ACoS,Ch9)

What Egwene had pried from Moghedien was a way to journey from a place you did not know well to one you did. Slower than Traveling, Skimming was not even one of the lost Telents...

There would be more in The Fires of Heaven when Asmo was explaining things to Rand.
e.g. Rand certainly didn't know the Caemlyn Palace courtyard enough to qualify as 'detailed knowledge' and Egwene couldn't have known the place outside Ebou Dar that she Skimmed Lan to (I don't believe that it was the same place as when she made the gateway to ED for Elayne and co.).
An annoying gateway error.

Why would them not being able to survive a gateway be a problem?

They prepared a place, and it just happened to be within walking distance of the attack?

Not realty. Caemlyn is huge by the standards of the time but realistically it's tiny

The sizes I proposed are not huge (well, they would be by standards in the middle ages but not now)

I believe Caemlyn is less than 300k people .... That's what .05% the size of London?

That would be an error if it hadn't been Skimming (the platform and what not) they were using.
