I thought the one who takes lead was outlined in their marriage vows. Nynaeve has authority in public settings, while Lan rules their private life. I don't see Lan's annointment to Kingship disrupting this dynamic, really.
They're supposed to switch if one is promoted over the other. Whoever holds the most power in public has to obey in private so the relationship always stays equal.
