...it's not like it makes them any deader. Getting outraged on their behalf doesn't make much sense.

The only extra risk by balefiring them (instead of just killing them in some other form of collateral damage) is the danger to the Pattern itself. And there's pretty much no other way Rand could have successfully tricked Graendal in order to eliminate her...
