We all know that the good guys will win; the question in this case is to what degree and in what form the victory will take.

Are there still readers who get the sense that the Dark One will win? I'm not sure if these sort of endings are in the realm of possible conclusions for the majority of fantasy stories. Are pyyrhic victories possible in this type of story?
