IMO, the DO is actually pure Chaos, while the Pattern is pure Order. Both have their faults - the DO is destructive and uncaring, but so is the Pattern in many ways (Fate is cruel - it takes a happy farmboy and condemns him to a terrible death and to inflict huge pain, suffering and death upon others).
Perhaps the DO does break free, and 'fuses' with the Pattern to begin a Fourth Age where men are free from destiny and can instead determine their lives.
