The Shadow is CONSTANTLY talking about how much they want Rand to turn to the dark side of the One Power, as it were.

I'd say giving Rand access to an all-powerful, insanely addictive power source only accessible through the Dark One (accessed in a fit of rage) definitely led Rand a few steps down that path.
