It was locked and warded by Caddy. Only she knew where it was, until she showed it to Sorilea and Bair.

I'm betting SH "sniffed it out". Elza was at the Cleansing and knew Caddy had it. Obviously he circumvented the wards, (Sorilea was closing the door when Caddy dismantled them so it couldn't have been her) and if he did that it probably wasn't beyond him to sniff out were it was. Don't forget that even run of the mill fades can detect channeling.

we don't know everything he's capable of and he could certainly have done something himself, like unravel weaves. He does have the power to shield after all.

but it seems speculative so I just have it in the back of my mind for now.
