but hopefully he's over that now, and capable of dealing with and accepting the pain and making the tough calls without getting messed up over it.

Strong, as Cadsuane/Sorilea go on about should have Rand able to make the tough calls, with regrets, but without going dark or spending hours weeping over lists because of it. I'll be disappointed if strong just ends up meaning 'willing to be a lap dog to the Empress/Amyrlin in order to achieve victory'.
