that there's a fair amount of people out there - writers and readers both - who take pride in science fiction being a thinking genre, a genre that uses advanced technology or alien creatures to reflect on humanity, its technology, the connection between them and the future of both. And Solaris is one of the flagships of that science fiction. I have no objections to categorizing Solaris as literature as well, but then that would be because I don't believe literature is a genre. It's merely a quality label.
