The first few books are almost exactly what you described. They're excellent for kids and the writing style is easy to read and not bad, but not particularly good or deep either.

But, as others mentioned, she matured the story and writing as her readers/Harry matured. The last couple books do not read like the first couple books.

I would say you are PERFECTLY justified in saying that you think the first couple books were bad. But this is not a series you can judge the whole of without reading the whole series. It's not homogeneous.
