The trial. I love how Dumbledore's mere presence makes Fudge so incredible uncomfortable. You tell his ruse of moving the trial at the last minute was to prevent this very thing and it failed miserably since Dumbledore appeared to have suspected they would pull something like that.
Indeed. It is a lovely scene. Fudge's manipulation of the trial is his most scary trait so far. It shows that he not only is willing to close his eyes and pretend that nothing is happening, he is actively going out of his way to neutralise people who speak out against him and might threaten his rule. Even if they are fairly innocent school boys.
Yes. I think this scene is where Fudge really demonstrates that he has taken the turn from merely inept to scary bad guy. He did it before, but we've only ever seen him as a generally likable guy, even when he does dumb things. This is an "Oh Crap" moment. I loved that Dumbledore anticipated this and showed up and cheerfully and politely puts him back in his place.
Definitely.
I wonder if Mrs. Figg really could see the dementors. It sounds like her testimony was just memorized and she had been told what to say about the dementors. Or is that just her nerves? In a way I'm surprised that Dumbledore would encourage a witness to lie, even to protect Harry.
I don't think she could see them. A squib, as I understand it, is basically the reverse of a muggle-born witch. They are muggles without the cultural background of the muggle world. If muggles cannot see dementors, then squibs should not be able to, either.
I also highly doubt that she can see them. I think Harry's thought process is supposed to tell us that she couldn't see them. I don't mind her lying about that bit, because the trial was being railroaded and she clearly knew there were Dementors there even if she couldn't see them. If she had admitted to not being able to see them Fudge would have jumped all over it to try to discredit the validity of her statement.
Yes. Regarding the other point that was raised, whether Dumbledore would have instructed a witness to lie, I think Dumbledore is able to see the difference between truth and Truth: she is using a lie to get the truth across. That is more important than adhering to precise details.
That's true. The trial was a complete joke since it was not really necessary given the situation and degree of rule breaking.
And of course we meet Umbridge for the first time.
*shudder*
I hate that woman. I want to reach through the pages and hit her. I still remember how she made me feel when I first read the book. I had such a visceral reaction to her I stayed up all night to finish the book just so she would be gone. I went to work the next day on two hours sleep, but I just needed her gone. She is an incredibly well done character, I don't remember ever having such a strong reaction to a character.
I know. Rowling's scariest creation.
Unsurprisingly, another British writer with a scary bureaucrat as the most memorable villain.
And as to Ron becoming prefect instead of Harry. I like that. I think it would seem too expected if Harry had gotten it. Plus I think it's good for his ego not to be the winner all the time. And Ron does tend to be slightly more responsible than Harry. Or at least he doesn't get so angry and lash out as often as Harry does in this book. Or go digging into things better left alone.
I like it, too. I don't know that he actually deserves it more, he can certainly be rather unreasonable.
Ron has just as much of a temper as Harry does, and Harry at least knows he's being unreasonable even if he does nothing to stop it. Ron abuses his power as a prefect far more than I think Harry would. Having said that, I think it was wonderful of Dumbledore to make Ron a prefect. I think Ron needed that boost of at least in this one thing not being overshadowed by anyone. Of course he's not the first in his family to make prefect, but he's the first one to make prefect over the famous Harry Potter. The negative of this is of course that Harry is further distanced from his friends and from Dumbledore. I'm sure that was part of Dumbledore's plan as well, a way to further distance himself from Harry to prevent the temptation for Voldemort.
Yes. Although I am not sure it separated him from his friends more than giving him the Prefect badge would have done. That would just have resulted in the opposite, in that it would fuel Ron's insecurities and jealousies, and they had enough to start with.
I think that if Harry had been made prefect it would have distanced him and Ron, possible to the point of breaking their friendship completely, but not distancing him from Hermione as much. But Dumbledore knows how important having close friends is for Harry and he wouldn't want to put that kind of strain on their relationship. So going with Ron had that benefit of keeping the peace between Ron and Harry.
