We get to know that Harry's experience of the Sorting Hat considering more than one house is not an isolated incident (with Hermione almost ending up in Ravenclaw). I like this, mainly because it makes clear that people aren't types, that there are facets to their personalities. This ties in with the bigotry theme, of course: bigotry is based in generalisations, and the good guys keep showing awareness that the world is not as clear cut and simple as all that.
She really should have been in Ravenclaw, surely. I mean, you know, she couldn't be for the story to work, but if you look at her character. If you're going to take a girl with her brains and attitude and put her in Gryffindor just because she's no coward, what does that say about all the other houses? That they're just there to take the dregs, those not good enough for Gryffindor and not evil enough to want to be in Slytherin?
Unless she specifically asked to be placed in Gryffindor. I wouldn't put it past her. She might have read something interesting about Gryffindor before she came, which made her want that house. As we have seen, the Sorting Hat takes choice very much into account. And she is terribly brave. The hat looks at potential, after all. Like Neville, she grows into spectacular bravery.
I like the idea of Giants as an endangered species. The parallels are there: humans (wizards in this case) have killed a few, but more importantly they have forced them into an unnatural way of existence which makes them die off. It ties in with the bigotry theme again, but differently: it is not so much about unfair stereotypes (the stereotypes here seem to be fairly accurate), as it is about wizards' rights to subsume the rights of other sentient beings to their own comfort.
Dumbledore opposes their extinction in Britain, but you have to wonder what his solution for the giants in Britain would've been. Rowling's good guys are opposed to killing in all cases (one of the more obvious indications of her political/moral views in the books, that), and never do it, even during the war.
Yes. It makes sense, considering the mystical importance attributed to taking a life.
Your last line reminds me of something that has bothered me in earlier books, though. Even the good guys have no problem terrorizing and hurting garden gnomes, and the feelings of the gnomes are only a source of mirth. What's with the double standards? Gnomes are evidently sentient to some degree - they live in houses, they shake their tiny fists, and so on - but for some reason abusing them is all fine and dandy. That kind of undermines their position in upbraiding those who treat house elves, goblins and others the same way.
True. It is odd. Although, doesn't someone at some point tell someone that the gnomes enjoy it?
