Dumbledore opposes their extinction in Britain, but you have to wonder what his solution for the giants in Britain would've been. Rowling's good guys are opposed to killing in all cases (one of the more obvious indications of her political/moral views in the books, that), and never do it, even during the war.
Yes. It makes sense, considering the mystical importance attributed to taking a life.
See, now this is bringing me back to your thing about Vanishing animals. Where do they go? Can they be brought back? If they can't, does that count as taking a life? Am I reading too much into this, like the implications of fake-Moody using Avada Kedavra to kill a spider? Why have I gone back to book 4 three times in this discussion? Have I asked enough questions yet?
Hmm, well, conventionally animals don't have souls. That may be relevant. Also, I think Dumbledore specifically mentions human life in this context. They eat meat all the time, after all.
This is a good point. I'm guessing they don't usually kill their meat with a curse, though? Maybe they should... it's probably better than a lot of other ways to go...
Your last line reminds me of something that has bothered me in earlier books, though. Even the good guys have no problem terrorizing and hurting garden gnomes, and the feelings of the gnomes are only a source of mirth. What's with the double standards? Gnomes are evidently sentient to some degree - they live in houses, they shake their tiny fists, and so on - but for some reason abusing them is all fine and dandy. That kind of undermines their position in upbraiding those who treat house elves, goblins and others the same way.
True. It is odd. Although, doesn't someone at some point tell someone that the gnomes enjoy it?
I can't remember if they enjoy it either, or if someone just says they do... Maybe Harry asks if it hurts them and receives some sort of strange explanation. I do remember thinking it was rather cruel. Don't they wander back all dizzy and disoriented or something? I should look it up. But I may forget about doing so.
I think the dizzy thing is that they get disoriented and cannot find their way back. But I am not sure.
I think you are right. I still have not looked it up. Crazy long day today.
