That could be part of it... I agree that for hearing the voices it's the same as the thestrals, of course, but I don't think you really needed to hear them to have a reaction to the veil. Harry was definitely slowing down to take a closer look even before he heard the whispering, so Ginny may have felt some of that same fascination.

Also, Ginny is again attracted by the bell jar with the hummingbird, and when Harry calls her on it, she tells him off for hanging out by the arch. Does she not even realize that she was staring at that one too?

I am not saying he is a hardened fighter at this point. But considering his violent tendencies when his parents are mocked, I feel fairly confident that his reaction to Bellatrix is to want to inflict pain. And I think that is such a defining part of Neville's make up that it overrides the danger of the situation. I may be wrong. Or, rather, it is all down to interpretations at this point.

Agreed with you here. Once he gets fired up, he doesn't really care if he has the skill or not. And at this point, he definitely doesn't have the skill, but he's not going to let anything stop him. I do love the image of him yelling "STUBEFY" at the top of his lungs with the broken nose, even though it's clearly not having any effect. Damned if he's gonna let that stop him. :)


Indeed. Although when it comes to "stubefy" the yelling may be part desperation.

I think the tapdancing is because Harry has told them he will break the prophecy if they hurt any of his friends.

Good point. Also, I think it helps to break up the tension a bit. The first time I read this scene, I was probably holding my breath. If nothing else, the tap-dancing makes you stop and go "WTF?" before you resume holding your breath again. :P

Yes, he proceeds to effortlessly duel with Voldemort while lecturing him on key philosophical points, and that is all very cool, and he is marvellous. But the reassurance of his presence is never there again in the same way. For me, at any rate.
