And as long as we are making inane comparisons, I'll just point out that Tolkien was actually working a real job throughout the entirety of his writing, as opposed to going to various conventions and watching football games.

Tolkien was a university lecturer, teaching young men (and, in those days, a few young women) English and Language. He wrote THE LORD OF THE RINGS in the period 1937-47, edited and revised it up until 1949 and then dicked around with his publishers for five years before getting the thing on the shelves.
Tolkien wasn't working very much at all at his day job in 1939-45 because the young men and women who were his students were off doing something else. What was that? Here's a hint: it involved Spitfires and a mental Austrian guy with a lame moustache.
So he actually had an immense amount of free time to write LotR in and, by his own admission, spent very long periods of that time doing sweet FA.
So, um, yes.
