And trying to be as annoying as possible.
He's had problems with it and has scrapped a lot of what he has written, and so it has taken 11 years to get what was originally meant to be one book. yes, that is irritating, especially if you had been reading it from the beginning.
You've said you are an aspiring writer, therefore you must know that things don't turn out as you like and you put them away and ignore them for a while before coming back to review them. And while you put the project to one side you do other things in the mean time. If worst comes to worst you scrap the project entirely.
This appears to be the situation Martin is in. it all got convoluted and he had to stop and start it again. In the mean time, he's done other things, worked on the Wildcard series and a few other anthologies, and some short stories. I think he's perfectly entitled to do this but you, it seems, take this as a betrayal and a personal insult. But finally the book is just about ready.
At the end of the day aDwD will not change the world. It'll hopefully be good but there are so many amazing books that have been written that you'll probably never read, so it's a bit silly to get so worked up over a single book.

Given the length of this thread, I think it appears that I'm a little more worked up than I am. When someone tells me that I am wrong, when I believe that I'm write, and I happen to have the time to prove that I'm not, I make it a point to discuss our disagreement.
I think Martin is both lazy and arrogant, because he's taken 6 years to work on this most recent book. I worked out the mathematics of this in an earlier post if you want to check. He would have to have been working at an excruciatingly slow pace in order to put out one 450k word book, even assuming he had to restart it once.
Yes I am an aspiring writer, which doesn't give me any writes to presume that I know more about the process than Martin. But it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize after a little thought that problems and convolutions taken into account, Martin has taken an absurdly long time on this book.
I've thought about enough to realize that there doesn't seem to be any other decent explanation as to why it's taken so long other than he's lazy or ignoring the book.
I don't think it's a professional or decent thing to take this long in between books. It's no moral failing, just a slight character flaw that might prevent me from getting the book. I certainly won't get the hardcover edition.
And I don't think there's anything at all wrong with voice distaste for this. I'm not about to storm Martin's home and demand he repent for taking so long on the book. But I think it's a fair claim that he's been lazy and/or negligent here.
Nothing wrong with stating a fact.
You must unlearn what you have learned.
