Long story short:
Guy named notch comes up with a game. He releases an alpha (early testing) version and tells people if they buy it they'll have access to all updates and all versions of the game when it's done. It becomes a huge success; during this time notch is releasing lots and lots of updates, on the order of one a week. Notch ends up making millions (literally) and founds a company.
Updates slow down. The company blog shows them playing with nerf guns. They go on vacation for a month. Updates are now few and far between.
You would not BELIEVE the uproar on the Internet about this game, and it's only been out a few years.
My point? At least we aren't on Play And Find Out.
Seriously, though, the resemblance between the two situations is uncanny, even down to the splitting of the fanbase. People hate waiting.
