Because it does seem that he's being unduly harsh. Yes, children died. Yes, that's tragic. Yes, it was due to being bullied and feeling generally unaccepted. No, this isn't the first thing that has caused children to take their own lives. Yes, bigoted people should learn to be upset by what their thoughts and statements are perpetuating, but no, "Christian" isn't the magical word that covers it all.

But I don't think it takes a great deal of thought to see that Dan Savage is over the top.
All he needs to modify his point is a lovely little word: some.
Yes, SOME Christians perpetuate the problem.
