No, I got the point, I'm just not sure it's that cut and dried. Joel Send a noteboard - 24/11/2010 01:41:40 PM
What I can tell you is that if my disabled mother had had to get out of her car and be searched just to drive down to the airport and meet me on the curb outside the terminal every time I came home, she'd have raised unholy hell with everyone in sight. Had I been forced to do the same and then submit to ADDITIONAL security checks just to see my fiancee off last Christmas I'd have been a bit upset, too.

That first check is a very brief one, no search involved but just asking those two questions and looking at how you behave while answering them, since their focus is on behaviour rather than forbidden items. For most people this'll be a 5-10 second stop before you're on your way.

Again, just because it works in Jerusalem doesn't mean it will work at LAX or O'Hare; the logistics are different. It's probably worth a try, but the suggestion Americans and Canadians are more tolerant of impositions doesn't really follow from evidence in the form of security checks to even enter the property or buildings. Perhaps such additional levels of security are wise, but let's not pretend less obtrusive yet stricter security demonstrates a lower Israeli tolerance for invasiveness. That we don't have security checks when you enter the grounds AND airport buildings probably has less to do with incompetence than with the frequency with which Americans would respond to "who are you and where do you come from?" with "screw off and die, you're not my mother". Something tells me that conversation doesn't end with "have a nice day, sir"....
