Which is pretty much what I figured. Joel Send a noteboard - 24/11/2010 01:56:24 PM
also, i know when i flew out of ben gurion back in 2002, it took us nearly 30 minutes to get through security just to be allowed into the area where they let us board the plane. the two things i found most interesting about the security process were: (1) they expect you to put your check-in luggage on the x-ray machine yourself, and pick it up yourself. once it's cleared, they put it on a gurney which is taken along with all the other passengers' luggage when the plane is ready to board. i don't recall once *not* knowing where my luggage was.

and (2) when they found something they considered suspicious in the x-ray scan, they asked me to open the bag IN FRONT OF THEM so they could search it better. none of this "bag goes into a black hole until you pick it up at your destination with an eerily creepy note left by the person you don't know from the government who had his/her hands in your carefully packed bag and may have taken your stuff from you" kind of thing.

the problem that most security experts cite when gushing about the israeli airport security model is that it only works for small airports which don't handle the kind of traffic US airports are famous for. if you look at the top 25 busiest airports in the world, roughly half are US airports. it's a great, fabulous security model which is 100% effective but completely impractical for the volume of traffic we need it to be used for.

Nice to have confirmation though, thanks. Ironically, I was once called upon to open my own luggage in front of security personnel while en route to see you, though that was a random spot check rather than the result of a questionable X-ray (at least, I assume it was; they didn't say anything about cause for suspicion, and if I'd felt like being an ass I would've brought up the Fourth Amendment, and probably been reminded the Constitution doesn't guarantee the right to interstate air travel). On the other hand, I'm pretty sure my checked luggage was opened at each stage of my trip here, and I never got a note (they DID apply more tape to it though, which I appreciated, since the straining latches were trying to give way before I even left the house). Maybe not in Copenhagen, but the Danes are, shall we say, interesting.

Some of it does seem worth a try, behavioral rather than racial profiling in particular; as noted in the article, there's nothing bigoted in being suspicious of someone based on how they act rather than how they look. That's just basic security. Of course, when that brown skinned dude over there is as likely to be IDF as PLO I suppose they don't have the luxury of that brand of bigotry. I'm not sure Americans would be mollified by long lines just to pick up friends and family at the airport though. Perhaps as importantly, if your primary concern is a plane blowing up in mid-air, or being hijacked, checking out the guys who empty the airport trash dumpsters is a waste of time and resources.
