And that was an honest opinion that *I* can respect.

Saying that what Perry said was over the top and will cost him any chance of winning if he can't dial it back is true as well. I don't defend what Perry said and I think he was either very stupid or taking a huge risk by saying it. I don't have any great love for Perry and I voted against him the last primary but saying he wants to lynch people is just hyperbole and deserves ridicule.
I suspect that if there were more folks near the middle saying things like the above to their more extreme bretheren, rather than circling the wagons and acting like it was a normal thing to say, these arguments would be non-existent.
Eschew Verbosity
No one is going to talk about Rick Perry threatening to lynch the Fed Chair?

"Hyperbole". That is exactly the word I was just thinking to describe the situation.

I fail to see how he accused anyone of treason, or urged violence, but OK.

He left it vague, so he gets away with promoting violence; that's "free speech" now.

I took his comment to be something meant to appeal to the Tea Party segment, but came out wrong.

You're right; liberals like Karl Rove and Ron Paul are already criticizing his comment.
