I know it is uncommon enough that I notice when someone uses a check in line at a store but my wife works for a small general contractor and they use paper checks all the time. I saw it as people using checks for everyday purchases which I think has gotten pretty rare but for some things a lot of people still like checks. We use checks for things like fundraisers for my daughter school because it is easier than figuring how to do an electronic transfer and if she looses the check we can just cancel it.
