Egg shells are porous. If you rinse the shell with water colder than the egg, it will cause the pores to constrict and draw any bacteria on the shell into the egg. Hot water will open the pores widely and the same effect can happen. The trick is to use water slightly warmer than the egg. So if your eggs are refrigerated, then the water just out of the tap before the real cold water starts coming out, it'll be fine.

I don't wash my eggs, but I am assuming that people who do may have concerns about bacteria. I thought you might want to know this random info.
