You'd be surprised, BT Maize has greatly reduced levels of mycotoxins (these particular mycotoxins are associated with all kids of nasty stuff, mainly as a carcinogen and are a bit of a pain in LEDC's). It's not been proven to have significant benefits in the field yet, but it does show that what appears to be black and white has grey areas.
You make an excellent point about the "trade" in sterilized GMO seeds though, I'd say it isn't a problem with GMO's as much as a problem with a society that allows it but if you give people a chance to exploit others it's going to happen and GMO's are certainly a vehicle for that.
