One, it contributes to the idea of a culture of fear. Which is kind of a bombastic phrase, but I'm thinking of comments I've seen such as "Why should my kids have to be under armed guard?" Yes, having an officer or two is normal in some areas, but I believe it's abnormal in most.

The obvious answer to "why should my kids have to be under armed guard?" is "because school shootings are no longer rare." That, after all, is why the recurring national debate has been rejoined, no? I mean, are you saying something must NOT be done? Why have inner city schools been putting metal detectors on their entrances since the '80s? Clearly there is a serious mortal problem here or we would not be debating; putting armed cops in schools would greatly mitigate that problem without infringing anyones constitutional rights or security.

Two, it doesn't really solve the problem. "Oh, okay, so now there's a guard at the school. Is there also going to be one at every church, every supermarket, every gathering of people anywhere?"

I suppose that is up to the proprietors of those private institutions, which public schools are not. Further, general public gatherings are not nearly as vulnerable and defenseless as elementary school kids, so they do not require the same degree of protection.
