He's retiring into a monastery in the Vatican, as I understand it. Legolas Send a noteboard - 13/02/2013 06:42:14 PM
There is, to my knowledge, no real precedent for the role of a former pope. I mean, the Catholic church has been around for 2000 years. They have precedent for EVERYTHING. What kind of authority will he wield? Will they call him a Cardinal, or will he be just some guy? Will he go back to being Ratzinger, or stay Benedict?

And apparently one of the few popes to have voluntarily given up the position before, Celestine V, is something of a personal hero to Benedict. Although his Wikipedia article makes his papacy sound like little more than a farce. He was apparently elected after he (being a well-known hermit) wrote a letter to the college of cardinals criticizing their failure to nominate a pope, upon which they nominated and elected him out of sheer spite, then he refused to accept his election, and finally resigned after five months, after which his attempts to retreat into a monastery were rebuffed by the new pope, who wanted him safe and sound where he could control him.
Should be interesting to watch. Meanwhile, I hope whoever follows is more open to actual cooperation with the Protestants.

And everyone else.

A priest can't marry, but a married person can become a priest. - 13/02/2013 03:51:02 PM 813 Views
