No, I never said anything of the sort Tom Send a noteboard - 20/10/2009 03:14:07 PM
The worker-employer relationship is a contractual one. When an employee signs up, the employer gives the employee the terms (and in some cases, the employee can negotiate them).

When you start work with an employer, the employer tells you how much vacation you get, how many sick days you can claim without going on medical leave, what the maternity leave policy is of the company, what sort of insurance and other benefits (such as 401k matching contributions) you are entitled to. It also sets how much it will pay you.

In exchange, the employer expects that you will WORK. That's the whole point of getting paid and getting benefits. If some person (in this case the expectant father) doesn't take a sick day, doesn't warn the employer ahead of time of a situation at home and hasn't any leave left, he's supposed to be at work on time and performing as expected.

If the employee doesn't do that, I don't see why the employer has some moral duty NOT to fire the employee.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

– Procopius
