There are legal rights only granted to spouses, ranging from medical to tax-related. How does whether a preacher presidse over the union or not have any bearing on whether those rights are warranted? If you think that from a economic and legal standpoint, civil unions have no purpose, then religious unions have no purpose in that light either.

Civil laws and customs granting such rights or privileges to marriage are recognizing a long-standing and wide-spread practice. Laws granting those same privileges to same-sex partnerships are imposing a novelty practice. There is no basis for same sex marriage, because the practices and customs associated with marriage originate with the difference in genders, a situation which does not apply to same-sex unions.
