I am simply unable to understand why it is seen as a good idea to involve private insurance companies, who are presumably looking to make a profit, into one of the most essential functions in a country.


Many in the U.S. don't consider health care an "essential function" in a country. As long as people disagree on this concept, they can rarely agree on things related to it. From what you say, nearly everyone in Norway agrees with the concept of "essential function" and it's presumably been that way all your life, so that is probably why you don't understand why it's such a big deal here in the U.S.
