i've been in your place before moondog Send a noteboard - 27/02/2010 03:59:59 AM
i put myself through college doing pizza delivery. our store was also one with a HUGE delivery area, and there were obviously better areas than others to deliver to. you've also picked up on quite a few of the things i've thought about while doing the job, so i guess it means that things don't really change that much ;)

also, if you deal with credit card slips at all, and you haven't done this yet, i always used this line: let's say you have the person sign the slip and they just sign it and try to give it back. IMMEDIATELY point to the total line and say "you forgot to fill in the total on the slip". 90% of the time, that was a tip that i would not have otherwise gotten if i hadn't spoken up :D

When you go to a restaurant, do typically tip?
- at least 15% unless the service was REALLY REALLY BAD

Do you tip a set amount or do you vary based on service quality?
- 15% for mediocre/ok service, at least 20% or more for good service

Why do you tip or choose not to?
- i have only not tipped once in the last decade or so (that i can remember (8 ) because it was a restaurant where i am a semi-regular patron, and this waitress always treats me like i killed her dog. last time i was there she tried her best to ignore me (i used to go in at least once a week just for perspective) and some dude walked in and her first comment was "hey, i haven't seen you since november!" yeah, she got zero because she deserved zero. otherwise i tip per the guidelines above.

Pizza delivery, tip the driver?
ALWAYS WITHOUT QUESTION

Why or why not?
i used to deliver pizza for a living (over 6 years on the job) so i know what it's like to depend on people being nice to you to pay your bills.

Personally, I am working part time delivering pizzas while I finish up my degree requirements here at MSU. It is irritating when I take a delivery to a house and do not get a tip, but it is even more insulting when someone will take the time to explain why I should not be tipped because "You are getting paid to drive this food here". I want to clear a few things up.

Yes, I do get paid for being at work. Minimum wage is currently 7.25 per hour, I get paid 6.25 per hour (soon to be decreased)

Tips are reported at the end of the night and taxed.

If I dont make up for the difference between my pay and minimum wage, the company is forced to make up the difference. but that is still 7.25 per hour.

I put a lot of wear and tear on my vehicle. yes the company must reimburse me for mileage (roughly a dollar a delivery) but the mileage is eaten up by gas costs and the overly large delivery area, up to 15-20 miles from the store. At the end of the night, mileage will barely cover gas when it is all put together, and there are maintenance costs to driving my car.

Delivering pizzas is one of the most dangerous jobs out there for the regular person, I could be mugged and killed at any time. I risk my life to bring your food.

I know it is a bit irritating to feel obligated to tip someone like me who has delivered your food in the rain, snow, cold, hurricane, or whatever crappy weather system is keeping you inside because you do not want to go out for supplies or food. But think about the guy who is soaked to the bone to bring you the food in the driving rain... Those tips add up, and if you dont tip and the company has to fork over more money to compensate the driver, they will raise delivery fees, food costs and everything just to get the money back from you any way.

Thus ends my little rant, I hope to hear some interesting responses and have dialog with you folks about this issue...

i would always tell the people who make a point of not tipping "do you get paid to do *YOUR* job? tips are how i get paid to do *MY* job, so you're basically telling me you think i should work for free". it doesn't always work out that they tip after i told them this, but i could tell it broke their little high horse they were on about "i don't get tipped to do *my* job"

and even with all of that, i still consider my time at that job as one of the best, most fun jobs i have EVER had. i never saw any fully naked women, but i *did* have a really nice looking girl show me her bare ass under her robe (on top of the good tip she already gave me ;) ). all in all, if i thought i could do that particular job at that exact restaurant as a career i probably would have dropped out of school...
