unlike the way you use right-winger? random thoughts Send a noteboard - 18/03/2010 06:50:12 PM
If the majority of news agencies had a right wing bias I would complain about that. I don't listen Rush and about the only Fox News I watch is the Sunday show and sometimes times the pre-prime time stuff. The NYT does have a strong bias and should be challenged for doing so. As for the liberal comment I call a spade a spade. I don't the "I hate those damn conservative rightwingnuts putting labels on me" argument. Liberal is what we call the people in this country who are on the left side of the democratic party and I it is symptomatic of what is wrong with the mindset of liberals that they believe the word is the problem and that it is the conservatives who have given liberalism a bad name.

i never said conservatives gave liberalism a bad name, i said conservatives have made it a dirty word. in other words, calling someone a liberal when it comes from a right-winger is like using racial epithets at <insert minority race here>. you can't deny that conservatives, republicans, etc use it that way because you use it that way yourself. if the conservatives didn't make it that way, who did? i highly doubt the left is going to invent a word to denigrate themselves in the main stream, whatever your revisionist view of it may be.

You can disagree but that doens't really change things. Yes republicans use the term liberal in a negative manner but it is the actions of liberals that have made it an effective statetegy.

Liberals add to the negative connitation of the word by spending so much energy running from it. Conseratives on the other hand activly embrace the title, hell even liberals such as Obama try and run as consearives.

So yes liberals have done much more then republicans have to make the word an insult. Running in a center right nation it makes sense in short term for liberals to try and paint theirsleves as conseratives but in the long run it has hurt their brand and the ideals they are trying to advance.

also, whether or not the NYT has a bias (which every news source does) doesn't mean it's not a credible source of news. i read NYT, fox, WSJ, LA times and i consider all of them worthy news material WHEN THEY ARE ONLY REPORTING A STORY. of course each paper's editorial sections have their own bias but editorials are not news no matter how much some people may wish them to be so...

I don't claim that the NYT is not a credible news source just that it is a biased source with an agenda and its reporting should be viewed as such. I read article from the NYT on a regular basis and the are occasions I post an article here it is often from the NYT.

It is not only in the editorials pages we see bias in the media and I really don't care about op-ed pieces. It is what they cover and how they cover it that is the problem. The NYT is the nations most prestigious newspaper and as such they need to be held to a higher standard but sadly as far as bias goes they often come in well short of that. They are not as biased as say the New York Post but if politics are involved you still have to look for other sources to get the rest of the story.

I also think NPR has a left leaning bias but I listen to them every morning on the way to work. They are a good source of information you just have to remember they have a bias.

also also, i have a catch phrase i made up for people who claim to be militant moderates. feel free to use it if it suits you ;) "not just maybe, but HELL MAYBE!"

There is nothing maybe about I just think there is middle road.
