Both Germany and Japan lost their conquests, but none of their own territory, regained their autonomy remarkably soon, and were in fantastic economic shape barely twenty years after the war.


Uh, Legolas? Germany lost East Prussia, West Prussia, Silesia, most of Pomerania and part of Brandenburg, and a good chunk of what remained was under the Soviet Union's thumb for decades. Add that to the violent ethnic cleansing of the lost German territories and the murder of German POWs in concentration camps along the Rhine, and I wouldn't say that Germany was treated with the kid gloves that you claim it was.

I'm not trying to start a debate of whether or not Germany deserved it, just pointing out that defeated Germany wasn't treated QUITE as gently as you claim :P
