It's pretty common sense as you say in the sense that Comey had lost a lot of credit with the political establishment on both sides, and if he can be replaced by someone equally or more competent but less tainted, that would be good.

On the other hand, given Trump's track record so far, one can't exactly have much faith in his ability and inclination to nominate someone like that - the suspicion is strong that he's doing this at least in part to sabotage the Russia investigations by trying to put some ally in Comey's place who can make it all go away. And even if Comey's replacement is in fact a good pick, still the timing of his firing can't exactly be helpful for those investigations.
