More seriously, Dahl and Rowling do an excellent job of showing that people are complicated, but I'm not at all sure that they are anything but steadfast in their concepts of right and wrong. Regardless of whatever sympathy we may have for Tom Riddle, he did bad things. Same with Snape and Malfoy and Dumbledore (and Harry and Ron at times).
